Jair Bolsonaro has been arrested after authorities found he posed a concrete flight risk while under domestic detention.

The former head of state was convicted of planning a government overthrow in September and given more than 27 years in jail, but he was staying under house arrest pending appeals.

High Court Judge Justice Moraes said the decision to arrest the septuagenarian politician was a preventative measure after "new facts" emerged.

This included seeking to disable his tracking device and a summons to a public vigil that could "allow for a possible escape.

Legal Document Reveals Flight Fears

In a paperwork permitting the custody, Justice Moraes said intelligence from the unit overseeing Bolsonaro's house arrest suggested the one-time head of state's plan to remove the surveillance device to secure accomplishment in his getaway".

This, it said, would be assisted by the confusion caused by the demonstration called by his son.

His son, Flávio, who holds office as a legislator, called for a gathering of his backers near his father's house to take place on the weekend.

His son wrote on digital networks on Friday: Will you battle for your homeland, or see it all from your mobile device there on your sofa? I invite you to struggle with us."

He said the demonstration would be so backers could seek divine intervention for his physical condition and for the return of democracy in our country."

Part of the magistrate's ruling was the potential of the former president's "relocation to embassies near the home, considering that the inquiries revealed a history of arranging to request asylum through a diplomatic representation", a declaration said.

His judicial problems have drawn the ire of fellow populist conservative American leader Donald Trump, leading him to implement a fifty percent tax on goods coming from Brazil.

Bolsonaro is being kept in a national police facility in Brasilia and will have a imprisonment assessment on the next day.

Recent Judicial Appeals

It was only on last Friday that the ex-leader's attorneys asked the Top Court to allow him to fulfill his full incarceration period under domestic detention, with electronic monitoring.

They also requested that he be authorized to leave his home for healthcare, saying he needed ongoing care for respiratory ailments and other health problems.

Details of Guilty Verdict

The former president was determined responsible of heading a plot aimed at maintaining his control after he was defeated in the national vote to his political opponent, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

High Court judges said that he knew of a plot which included plans to murder the current president and his vice-presidential running mate, Geraldo Alckmin, and to imprison and murder Justice Moraes - the top judicial official who has been managing the former president's case.

The plot was prevented because it failed to get the endorsement of the military leaders. The current president was inaugurated without incident on 1 January 2023.

But a week later, on the eighth of January, thousands of his followers stormed and vandalised government buildings in the federal district, Brasília.

The police stepped in and around fifteen hundred individuals were taken into custody.

The judges found that the demonstrators had been incited by him whose scheme, they said, was for the Brazilian military to step in, bring back stability and bring him back to power.

At the time, Bolsonaro's lawyers called the decades-long sentence unreasonably severe".

He was also banned from seeking elected position until the year 2060 - a decade minus two years after the completion of his term.

The former president called the legal proceedings a political persecution and said it was designed to prevent him competing in the next presidential race.
