The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the US on five Europeans involved in fighting digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official has said.

European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions were placed on individuals that were central to efforts to introduce laws regulating US-based technology firms.

“For too long, European activists have led organised efforts to coerce US companies to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
