Our team is checking video footage and photographs posted earlier today that purport to show the scene of a reported car bomb explosion that Russian officials state fatally injured a senior soldier in Moscow.

Russian authorities confirmed that Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov was in the vehicle that detonated and that he succumbed to his injuries. A probe is under way.

The initial step to verify the location from which the pictures originated relied on posts saying the blast happened on Yasenevaya Street in the southern district of the Russian capital.

We used panoramic mapping services on digital map platforms and the Russian search engine Yandex to match the distinctive yellow colour of a nearby residential complex captured in the video.

Locating additional buildings, streetlights and the street layout verified where the footage were captured.

Additionally, we verified that the video clips were recent and that the images had not been digital alteration.
