Inuit Women Achieve Judicial Triumph over Fight with Denmark over Coerced Contraceptive Coil Affair.

Victims of a historical program where numerous comprising Greenlandic women and girls were forcibly fitted with intrauterine devices (IUDs) absent informed permission are declaring victory following their legal fight with Copenhagen.

It has been confirmed that they will be entitled to financial redress from a settlement fund.

Government Agreement Reached

Folketinget, along with the government, finalized a deal that entitles an estimated four thousand five hundred Greenlandic women to claim 300,000 DKK (around thirty-five thousand pounds) each.

The announcement follows a three-year battle led by a group of women that initiated legal proceedings demanding compensation over the pain and suffering they had endured, arguing it constituted a violation of their personal rights.

Colonial Background

Denmark administered Greenland as a colony until 1953 maintaining control of its medical services until 1992.

Earlier this year, following a long period of failing to acknowledge the violations, the government made an expression of regret. The country's leader apologized over the “institutional prejudice” against Greenlandic females within the state medical apparatus.

“It has had major impacts for the affected women who have experienced not only physical but also psychological harm,” said a government minister.

Redress Process Details

Authorities clarified those who were given contraception covertly during a thirty-one year period can apply for payment starting next year. Relevant legislation will come into force in June.

Based on results from a independent investigation of contraceptive practices from that era, roughly 4,500 women are potentially entitled to the fund.

For eligibility, applicants will need to:

• Provide a “credible report” detailing what happened.
• Have lived on the island during the qualifying period.
• State on oath that they had no knowledge nor gave permission for the procedure.

Perspectives from the Victims

One of the women, who was fourteen when she was instructed to go for medical attention for no clear reason, said it like a violation.

“Speaking out as speakers and interviewees has been effective,” she said. “We started in 2022 and now a relatively short time we have secured an apology plus financial acknowledgment.”

Another perspective shared satisfaction, saying, “This is a positive outcome. As my mother put it: we won.” Although some believe the amount should have been greater, there is relief regarding the recognition of what happened.

Official Reactions

A Greenlandic minister called the settlement as “long overdue”. Stating clearly, “It is not about the money. It concerns formal acknowledgment of the injury and the very severe consequences.”

The relevant cabinet member acknowledged these events was a “troubling period within the joint past”, noting that compensation “will not erase the pain for survivors” yet it “serves to acknowledge and express regret over the experiences.”
