In the early hours of Saturday, reports emerged of major explosions rocking Tehran, amid statements from Israel that it had carried out a preemptive military action.
Powerful Explosions and Smoke Witnessed in the Heart of Tehran
As per on-the-ground reports, two powerful explosions were audible in Tehran on Saturday morning. Correspondingly, columns of thick smoke were observed rising over the centre and east of the Iranian capital.
“The type of explosions indicates that this is a missile attack,” one news agency reported, without immediately offer further details.
Background: Escalating Strains and Prior Developments
The incident takes place against a background of severely escalated tensions in the region. Major events preceding this attack include:
- American Naval Deployment: A massive buildup of American warships in the Middle East, including the repositioning of aircraft carriers.
- Nuclear Talks: Recent talks between the US and Iran on Tehran's nuclear programme ended inconclusively, with indications of further talks planned.
- Official Rhetoric: Before the attack, a senior US official had described Iran as “the leading state sponsor of terrorism” and delivered threats regarding its weapons development.
- Diplomatic Deadline: Reportedly, a deadline of 10 to 15 days had been given to Iran to resolve the atomic standoff or face severe consequences.
Reaction from Tehran
In response to earlier allegations, Iranian authorities had accused the United States of spreading “falsehoods” about its missiles programme. They dismissed assertions about weapons development and protest deaths as unfounded.
The situation remains fast-moving, with further updates expected as the situation develops.
