UN:Me: An Psychological Horror That Blends Silent Hill and Among Us Mechanics

The latest Day of the Devs online presentation unveiled a number of intriguing upcoming titles, but one especially has seized the imagination: UN:Me. Developed by Historia and Shueisha Games, this single-player adventure appears to fuse together the oppressive atmosphere of a Silent Hill title with the suspicion-driven heart of Among Us.

"It's a unique game where a young woman containing several personalities inside her must escape from a labyrinth of the psyche," states developer Yasukazu Kawai.

Stepping Into a Fractured Mind

In UN:Me, players assume the role of an unnamed female protagonist who appears to be of teenage years. Within her reside four distinct souls, all possessing unique anxieties and drives. These souls can take over spontaneously, releasing their innermost phobias upon her without warning.

Based on showcased gameplay, much of the action unfolds within a eerie hospital, while other scenes show the protagonist exploring a desolate church.

An Environment of Personal Horror

"What makes you fearful of? What causes you uncomfortable?" poses game director Shun Sasaki. "High places. Confined spaces. Authority figures. Elements that seem trivial to others can activate something primal within us. This game explores that concept — fears that are specific to every individual."

The central gameplay loop involves controlling whichever soul emerges at any given time. However, these souls will switch involuntarily as you play. During exploration, each soul's fears become amplified and attack the girl one after another. When the soul changes, so does the particular terror the player experiences.

Unsettling Visuals and a Fatal Choice

At first glance, UN:Me shares noticeable aesthetic parallels with the Silent Hill franchise. The setting is filled with orderlies all sporting the same face, with unnervingly wide smiles. Figures in the waiting room have large flowers growing from their heads are. Flowers are an ever-present theme, juxtaposing natural beauty with supernatural dread.

Yet, UN:Me presents a unique twist. Players are tasked with deducing which of the four entities haunting the protagonist is the "true" one. "Each of the personas claims that the body is rightfully them," explains a developer. "During the game, you need to figure out who is real."

After a player have deduced a soul is fake, they must eliminate it. But, because every entity can deceive or hide the reality, it is incredibly simple to choose incorrectly.

"Perhaps you've already eliminated the true [soul] by your own actions," a voice states. "The final entity standing might be a fraud. Either way, your decisions are irreversible."

UN:Me currently lacks a publicly announced release date, but it is can be wishlist on platforms.
